Requirements

The following are the requirements to receive a certification from Los Angeles Superior Court to sit as a Temporary Judge:

  • You must be an attorney in good standing with the California State Bar with no disciplinary action pending, no felony convictions, and have been admitted to practice at least 10 years before the appointment. For good cause, the Presiding Judge may permit an attorney admitted to practice for at least 5 years to qualify.
  • Fill out and submit the Temporary Judge Application. The Temporary Judge Program application is fillable and available on this website by using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5.0 or later is required). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, you may download the application for free from Adobe's Website. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • Attorneys must complete a total of 9 hours of training in these areas:

    Bench Conduct and Demeanor In-person training only 3.0 hrs
    Ethics On-line training available 3.0 hrs
    At least one area of the following areas of substantive law; Small Claims, Traffic, Unlawful Detainers, Civil Harassment and/or Family Law [California Rules of Court, Rule 2.812 (c)]. (On-line training available) *On-line training available Hrs. may vary

*Please note the Judicial Council on-line training for Civil Harassment and Family Law are in addition to the Temporary Judge Program training materials. If you are interested in certifying in these areas of law, please contact the Temporary Judge Program to obtain the training materials.
