Program Overview
The Los Angeles Superior Court provides the Private Counselor Directory and the Private Child Custody Evaluators Directory as on-line resources to assist litigants and their attorneys in identifying mental health professionals who have experience in treating and assessing families involved in child custody disputes. The professionals listed have requested inclusion on one or both of these lists.

The Private Counselor Directory includes professionals who indicate that they provide counseling services for families experiencing conflict surrounding the custody and/or visitation of their children. You may search for a counselor by name, area of specialty or by geographic area by clicking on “Advance Search.” Individuals seeking counselors may also refer to the Los Angeles County Info Line, “211,” which provides referrals to counseling agencies by geographical area.

The Private Child Custody Evaluators Directory includes professionals who have submitted an application indicating that they have completed the experience and training necessary to conduct evaluations as mandated by law. Professionals desiring inclusion on the list must also provide copies of their clinical license, professional insurance policy and evidence of domestic violence training. The Private Child Custody Evaluators Directory was developed in accordance with the Los Angeles County Local Court Rule.

Using the on-line list, you may search for an evaluator by name, area of specialty, geographic location, or type of evaluation by clicking on “Advance Search.” Evaluations are generally either Full Evaluations or Brief Assessments, sometimes referred to as Solution-Focused or Expedited evaluations. Please click on Child Custody Evaluations to learn more about the purpose of an evaluation and to find a general description of the techniques used by evaluators and the types of evaluations available. You will also find directions on how to access a monthly calendar that indicates the availability of some of the private evaluators performing brief assessments.
