You should try to contact the defendant to resolve the problem before you start the Small Claims process.


You must make a demand on the other person and ask for the money, property, or other relief that you intend to ask for in Small Claims Court. You can make the request by asking or in writing. When you make your written request be sure to:

  • Send by mail
  • Request return receipt from the US Post Office
  • Keep copy of any letters sent for evidence
