ADA - Access Information For Persons With Disabilities

The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights statute that requires all state and local governmental entities, including the courts, to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities who have an interest in court services, programs, and activities. The Superior Court does not discriminate on the basis of disability in employment or in the admission and access to its services, programs, or activities. The Court has designated an ADA Coordinator and ADA Liaisons at each Courthouse to ensure that facility's compliance with the requirements of the ADA.

The Judicial Council of California created the pamphlet Disability Accommodations in California Courts to explain how California’s courts meet ADA requirements.

REQUEST FOR ACCOMMODATIONS BY PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
If you have a disability and need an accommodation, you may request an accommodation using Judicial Council Form MC-410, Request for Accommodations by Persons with Disabilities and Response.
Please make your request as far in advance as you can. Having more time allows the Court to better respond to requests for accommodation.
Form MC-410 is available
  • by clicking here, or the link above,
  • from the clerk’s office or ADA Liaison at any courthouse, and
  • from the ADA Coordinator upon request by mail, email, or telephone.
Submit your completed form by e-mail, e-file, fax, in person, or by post to
  • the Court’s ADA Coordinator at ADACoordinator@LACourt.org or the postal address below,
  • the clerk’s office, filing window, or ADA Liaison at your courthouse, or
  • the Department or courtroom hearing your case.
Jurors can also submit requests to the Juror Services Department—their contact information is on your jury summons.
ADA COORDINATOR

For general questions, or to request a copy of the form by mail, please contact the Court’s ADA Coordinator by email at ADACoordinator@LACourt.org or by phone at (213) 633-5882. The ADA Coordinator’s postal address is:

ADA Coordinator
Stanley Mosk Courthouse, Room 546
111 North Hill Street
Los Angeles CA 90012

ADA Liaison Information

For information about accessibility at a specific Courthouse (such as accessible parking, paths of travel, restrooms, wheelchair access in courtrooms, etc.), please choose the Courthouse from the list on the right. The Court has also assigned ADA Liaisons at each location to ensure ADA compliance. Their telephone and fax numbers are on the list of Los Angeles Superior Court ADA Liaisons.

AVAILABLE ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Court has several services and technologies available to make Court services, programs, and activities accessible to as many people as possible. The accommodations the Court can provide are not limited to the items listed below.

If you have questions about other accommodations that may be available, please contact the Courthouse’s ADA Liaison, or the Court’s ADA Coordinator at (213) 633-5882.

Language Access Services

Anyone who needs an interpreter for American Sign Language (ASL) (or another language) may contact Language Access Services at (213) 745-3183 and select option 0 (zero) to speak with staff. You can also request an interpreter by following the instructions at the Language Access Services Welcome Page.

Assistive Listening System (ALS)

Portable Assistive Listening Systems (ALS) are available and may be requested from courtroom staff or a facility's ADA Liaison.

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART)

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) Service (live captioning) is available for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have some other disability. CART can be requested from courtroom staff or from the ADA Coordinator using Form MC-410.

Text Telephone/Teletypewriter (TTY)

For people who use a TTY device, please use the California Relay Service by dialing 711. Jurors using TTY may also call the Court’s juror services department at (888) 354-0441 (TTY).

Voice Amplification & Visual Projection

Some Courthouses have systems that amplify a person’s speaking voice, or the Court can provide equipment that projects typed communications onto a screen. Either may be requested from courtroom staff or that facility’s ADA Liaison using Form MC-410.

Document Magnifiers

Desktop document magnifiers are available and may be requested from courtroom staff or that facility’s ADA Liaison using Form MC-410.

APPEALS AND GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES
If the Court denies your request for accommodation, you have 10 days from the date your request was denied to appeal the Court’s decision. You must follow the procedures in California Rule of Court rule 1.100(g).
  • If your request was denied by a Judge or Commissioner, you must file a petition for writ of mandate in the appropriate reviewing court under California Rules of Court rules 8.485-8.493 or 8.930-8.936;
  • If your request was denied by any other Court staff, you must submit a written request for review under California Rules of Court rule 1.100(g). Please submit appeals to the ADA Coordinator.
If you believe that the Court has otherwise discriminated against anyone on the basis of disability, you can follow the Court’s Grievance Procedure for Disability Discrimination Complaints.
GENERAL RESOURCES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
Transit and Paratransit

To plan your visit to the court, you can use Metro's Trip Planner for public transportation.
Access LA, Los Angeles County’s Paratransit program, is available if you cannot use public transportation.

Assistive Technology

Ability Tools is a public program created by California’s Assistive Technology Act to help people with disabilities get assistive technology. Assistive technology is any device, hardware, or software that assists people with disabilities. Assistive technology can range from magnifying glasses to motorized scooters.

Telephones

The Federal government requires a nationwide 711 relay system to make telephones accessible to people with disabilities. Some people need special telephones to use the 711 relay system.

Other Programs

California's Department of Health Care Services' Medi-Cal web page has information about California’s implementation of the Federal Medicaid program. Some people qualify for durable medical equipment that the program can provide.
